Grief and Support for KidsWhen a family experiences a death, children have special needs during the time of grief. Grief counseling, programs and camps for children are available in all offices unless otherwise noted. Check the news section and calendar or call Hospice of the Bluegrass Center for Grief and Education (859) 277-2700 or (800) 876-6005. Transportation and child care can often be arranged with proper notice. Daniel's CareDaniel's Care provides special grief counseling, which includes individual sessions, group session including school groups and camps to help children through this very confusing time. Hospice Grief Camps/RetreatsHospice's camps are weekend retreats for children, ages 6-12 or teens, who have experienced the death of a loved one within the past two years. Grieving children and teens often feel very alone. Most of their friends do not understand how it feels when someone special dies. At Hospice's grief camps, children and teens will meet others who have also lost a loved one. It is a safe place where they can express their grief. Guidance and support will be provided by professionals and trained volunteers who also lead activities such as nature hikes, drama and art activities. There is a cost for camp but scholarships are available. An application must be completed for each camper. Applications must be returned to hospice offices at least one week before camp. Parents will need to attend an orientation meeting. Read more about camp and get an application here.
